Join us to help children—especially those affected by poverty, conflict, and discrimination—get back to learning. The Luminos Fund runs Second Chance programs: accelerated 10-month learning programs that help children catch up on their education. The results are fantastic. We've helped educate 132,611 children and over 90% of our students transition into mainstream schooling upon completion of our programs.
The Luminos Fund designed the Second Chance program to help children become self-directed students and persist in school for the long-term. The result is an intensive, joyful, and productive learning experience as children benefit from more than 4x as many reading hours than their government school peers. The program is cost effective at as little as $150 per student annually with a significant return on investment. Even six years after completing the program and transitioning into mainstream schooling, Luminos students:
With your support, we can help more of the world's out-of-school children get back to learning.
When children miss out on school due to poverty, conflict, or discrimination, our programs give them a second chance to learn. To help them catch up, children get three years' worth of schooling in just 10 months. Facilitators dedicated to their students' success provide a fun, intensive, and deep-learning environment. At the end of 10 months, children are functionally literate and can rejoin their peers in school.
Where do we work?
Currently, Luminos works with children in Ethiopia, Lebanon (with Syrian refugees), and Liberia.
Who are the children?
The children in our programs are an even mix of boys and girls, typically 8-14 years old. Most have never learned to read, and may come from illiterate families. Upon completion of our programs, most re-enter school at the fourth grade level.
